Where Did Zombies Originate?

By Matthew Hagerty

They go by many names - Walking dead, mindless creatures, the undead. They are zombies. The mindless, brain and flesh-eating creatures of the night. They appear in movies and games throughout the years and a history of zombies would help explain where they originated from.

The walking dead are said to crawl out of their graves to feast upon the flesh and brains of the living. Brains being the source of the body's functioning and flesh holding all the insides, well, inside. The origins of zombies is much like any fairy tale or folk tale. There is a little truth behind the story and they are meant to warn others from the unknown. The evolution of these creatures of the dead has also grown in detail and ability.

Voudou (pronounced Voodoo) originated in West Africa and moved into Haiti, Cuba and parts of Louisiana. This is where the word zombie first appears. Voudou is a religion that was and still is misunderstood by many; thus the scary walking dead stories begin. It was believed that a Voudou priest or sorcerer could cast a spell on a deceased person, cursing them, and making them a zombie-zonbi or zombi, or departed spirit. This newly undead creature would then be able to be the priest or sorcerer's minion, mindlessly controlled by him or her alone.

The folklore of the zombie curse most likely stemmed from the fear of the religion and the unknown of the religion. Like any folklore, there is room for truth, however. Throughout the history of cultures evolving and the evolution of "Hollywood's monsters, " these creatures of the night have made their way to the limelight.

In France during the Middle Ages, it was believed that souls of the dead would return to haunt the living, usually when they had been wronged-such as in a case of murder. These could also be soldiers who had died in battle coming back to take their revenge. These stories of the undead can be seen over many cultures in many different ways.

Mummies are also creatures of the undead that rise to fulfill the curse on trespassers. This is another story told to ward off thieves from the tombs of kings. There is debate on whether or not these undead corpses and the zombie type ones are the same. In original belief, mummies were the dead that could be resurrected into the same person and live again. Zombies are mindless undead creatures. However, Egyptian mummies and zombies are very similar and could be different versions of the same story.

The classic movies with zombies show the mindless creatures of a Voudou sorcerer. The walking dead has evolved in their mindlessness and controlled beings. They also have become creatures from chemical outbreaks and even have cures in some movies. They are also move violent in nature and stronger. Groaning "brains" is a thing of the past, however, they are usually met with grunting or just noises. These creatures of the night will more likely show you that they want to eat your flesh than tell you. The living creatures around these undead must run, fight off, and look for high places to hide to have any luck against them. A simple slamming of the door no longer works.

Zombies have evolved in their movie lives, but the history is still the same. They are creature of the dead with the unfortunate desire for living flesh. Where will they go next? Only the creators of movies and games know this. The phrase of "walking like a zombie" may not mean the same as it used to, but looking into a history of zombies, perhaps they can be remembered for their origins and feared once again.
