Getting New Ideas for Video Games

By Monica Mae

When creating new video games, regular skills would never suffice since art has to be applied as well. Since art is involved, making a new game can be arduous.

In order to make your new game creative and fun, here are some methods that can aid you.

1. Create something that can surprise the players. This can be a difficult task since programmers typically have an organized system. However in order for players to be attracted to the game, they have to provide unexpected occurrences to make players play more. By having this kind of aspect, your game could definitely be anything but average.

2. Make a video game for specific players. It is important to design a game for a particular group of players since their interests are usually similar to one another. Make sure that they will like the characters you're making as well as the stories. Furthermore, don't limit your designs since it is much better to have an idea that is beyond your wildest imagination.

3. Imagine that you're the video game. If you were the video game that you're designing, how would you want to be played? Attempting to answer this question should set you off on quite a creative spree of new and original ideas (if not one hell of a giggling session). Don't just throw the goofy ideas that you get from this exercise into the trash bin. Seriously think of how to implement them into your video game. This strategy is sure to put you on the gaming map.

4. Apply the substitution technique. Since players today are looking for something that is above the average type of play, you have to change those regular features into something that is extraordinary. To give you some examples, you can try replacing a typical character into an object or an animal. Furthermore, you can replace those predictable stories into something that has an unexpected outcome.

5. Finally, don't design a predictable game. What makes a player be surrounded with ennui is when he or she can already predict the outcome even before reaching 50% of the entire story. That is why you have to apply randomness in different stages and make sure that they will provide results that cannot be anticipated by the player. When a player has no idea on how the game will turn, he or she will find ways to solve it, hence, making him or her continue on playing the game.
