The Advantages Of Guitar Scale Mastery

By Jonah Schriever

Playing the guitar is a favorite pastime for many people around the world. All sorts of people learn to play guitar so that they can enjoy a good jam session together. It is the social part that makes guitar so popular. With just a few basic chords it is possible to strum and sing together for hours. But chords are not the only thing guitarists can do with guitars. In fact, playing scales will bring the enjoyment to an even higher level. With guitar scale mastery, an average guitar lover can move into a world of music enjoyment beyond the basics.

For anyone that has any music training at all, talking about scales may bring up all sorts of horrible childhood memories. With a less than informed teacher, scales become the drudgery of repeating series of notes to improve technical ability, and that is about it. But with a master teacher, learning scales and how they relate to other musical concepts can bring guitar playing into a musical world that is much more fun than one might imagine.

Scales are one of the important building blocks of music that, added to chords, really make guitar music come alive. If you want to solo on your guitar, you will need to know them well. If you ever heard a musician take off into a great solo riff while everyone adds the chords and the bass notes, then you know how exciting it sounds.

You can learn scales easily if you learn them the right way from the beginning. There is nothing particularly difficult about them, because they follow orderly patterns that make a lot of sense when taught well. Learning the logical patterns well actually helps to develop a good musical ear and solid musical playing. For most, the discipline of learning these note patterns leads right into the ability to play very enjoyable and interesting musical. Guitar scales are really a bit of science and art combined into one, with logic and artistry working together to make music.

Most guitarists play until their playing becomes second nature to them. Learning how to do this takes some time and effort, but there are great guitar methods to help you focus on this technical skill. Learning to improvise right at the start often comes from knowing scales so well that scales are second nature to you. You can develop this skill. It does not only come naturally.

The goal is to make your music effortless, or least to make it sound as if it is. To do this takes practice. The single finger practice that scales offer builds your muscles so that they are stronger and more agile. This agility makes for smooth playing. It can also make your chord playing stronger, simply because each finger is stronger. But, that is a side effect that is a good bonus. You will want to focus on scale practice for all the benefits it will give you.

If you use a method that teaches guitar scales in an organized and logical way, you will have half of your battle won. Look for a method that teaches you not only how to play single chords, but how to recognize the way they are related to each other. In similar fashion, learn your scales not singly, but as related things. Your music will flow from your guitar if you understand how the scales and chords flow with each other.

Guitar scale mastery is an excellent goal for any guitarist who absolutely loves to play. The process just takes determination toward a goal, some time, and a high amount of effort. But you may be rewarded for your effort with better guitar skills, and that will make it all worthwhile.
