Which Song Should I Sing for my First Performance

By Adam Bosun

Song Selection

The art of choosing the right song for your vocal range and audience

If you're new to singing in front of an audience remember song choice is crucial. When you are weighing up your possible song selections remember to pick a song you are familiar with and can confidently perform e.g. A song well within your vocal ability.

There are two fairly clear reasons why this is so important. First you will be much more confident performing a song you know you can handle. Secondly if you are performing for the first time in front of an audience you could well get nervous and this is the time when you start forgetting lyrics or the structure of the song. Stick with something you have rehearsed plenty of times and you reduce the capacity for this to happen.

Secondly you should select a song that resonates with your audience, either through lyrics or melody. If you're performing a song everybody knows your odds of getting the crowd involved increases substantially. A word of caution however the more familiar the song you perform the more critical an audience can be as they will have heard the tune many times and know exactly how it should sound.

This is a key consideration when it comes to singing and why many of us are so opinionated when talking about vocalists (think about the last time you watched a talent show like 'The Voice') The primary reason for this is unlike any other musical instruments we are so conversant with the human voice that we instinctively know when something doesn't sound quite right.

Good songs to sing for newbies are those that are fairly well known although not always a current hit or something you would expect to hear on a popular station in heavy rotation on a day by day basis.
