What Are Sample CDs And Sampling?

By Andrew Kelly

Digital Samplers serve a vital role in modern pop music. The vast majority of songs include sounds created by a sampler. Samplers are also often used in film soundtracks and also in games for consoles and TV. In fact whenever sound is recorded it is most often replayed by a digital sampler. Often if a digital sampler is not used in a musical piece one has more than likely been utilised in the writing stage, otherwise a keyboard using sampler technology would haves been used. The vast majority of musicians use computers these-days to record their music and the music software more often than not incorporates a software sampler. To satisfy the wants of the many composers there is a massive selection of sample collections giving an incredible choice of sounds for use in compositions and it is also possible to sample your own timbres but there are a number of points to keep in mind if you do your own sampling.

Firstly it's extremely important that you know the copyright laws and, that sampling a part of somebody else's recording (for using in a commercial recording) is only legal if you seek and get clearance(permission). Of course you may use copyrighted samples for personal use only but if you can not get clearance(permission) and you release a track which uses uncleared samples you will find yourself in dangerous waters. It is for this reason the vast majority of musician settle to use sample libraries which feature cleared samples.

Nowadays soft-samplers, such as EXS24, Halion, Structure, Gigasampler and Kontakt, are able to replay immensely large samples RAM memory or the hard disk which allows for highly detailed timbres. There exists plenty of businesses involved in the supply of sample libraries for use in hardware and software samplers which have samples of virtually any musical instrument plus lots of sounds from other sources. When samplers were first produced the hardware and the sample libraries were massively expensive to buy, but, these-days you can find sample libraries which are available from the alarmingly highly priced right down to the unbelievably cheap.

The very first collections of samples featured only tiny samples and only a small selection of sounds. To make things more intolerable the the available sample sets proved to be very expensive. Nowadays it is common to find low priced sample DVDs containing in excess of one hundred varying timbres ranging from hard basses to shimmering pads and wailing leads and usually a collection of sound FX.
