The Wheel Of Roulette Driven By Chance

By Gregory Brooks

The casino game of roulette, or "little wheel", as it is referred to at times, is said to have a long history, probably originating in France, in the seventeenth century. Roulette is nowadays an extremely popular casino game, but who created it, remains a mystery. Some allude to its invention to the famous mathematician/scientist of that time, Blaise Pascal, and others believe that all this was the work of a monk. The arguments on the issue of the scientist taking off time to develop a casino game, or the profanity of a pious man engaging in this kind of activity, have long gone on. However, there is a new twist to this story, with one school of thought believing the Chinese to be the real createors, who later sold the game of roulette to Dominican monks. Anyway, due to its French origin, its popularity has gone up in many Parisian casinos.

Through the ages, the same design of the roulette wheel has persisted, as it is a wheel game. Two wagering areas have been designated in the table layout. All the digits are arranged on the inside and the outside has fields colored in red and black so as to enable color betting. When you consider the wheel, an interesting feature is that it has two types - the American variation and its European counterpart. The European roulette has 37 slots with a single zero, and has a house edge of only 2.63, while the American wheel sports 38 slots, and has an additional slot 00. This variation was said to be the creation of some Frenchmen, who added the extra double zero slot, in order that the edge for the American game would go up to 5.26, and almost double the take of the casino. Later, the double zero was replaced by the American eagle, to infuse a show of jingoism. Whether roulette is a game of sheer chance, is a long argued subject, but the opinion of the mainstream seems to be in favor of it being so.

The strange thing about the game is that none except the official croupier of the game of roulette is allowed to handle the roulette wheel, while all the gamblers can only remain spectators and this itself is an indication that the game of roulette is one of sheer chance only. In the game, the black digits are arranged to the left and the red numbers, on the right. The zeros take center field. Just looking at this scenario would be sufficient for any player of repute to comprehend if the outcome of the game hinges on chance or effort.

Roulette is generally simple to learn and fun to play. The objectiveof roulette is arbitrarily to pick a number which will win at the wheel. This obviously seems very difficult. So instead, you can also choose between colors or odd or even numbers. Just like any other game, there are a number of variations for roulette. Therefore, make sure you are aware of them before you bet big money on it. Though the game looks simple, that may not be the case, especially since the control is not with the gamblers. Though, because of the number combinations and online versions, more and more gamers are getting into the game.

Especially with online variations, the game has staged a great comeback, and is extremely well-known. Obviously, the European versions with a single "0" are the most preferred. Thanks to the Internet, gamers from anywhere can play the European roulette and take advantage of the lower edge. Due to this very reason, the game did not experience a huge uptake in the US.

Several prominent clienteles, including stars of the sports and the entertainment industry, not to speak of the nobility, are always crowding around the roulette wheels of the established casinos. For this reason alone, roulette in Europe, is being referred to as the "king of casino." Most people deem it a great honor to be seen to stand along with the prominent stars at the roulette wheel. It is a strange factor that, even though roulette is a game of sheer chance, gamers are thronging to its tables and are fascinated at the variants of the game of roulette. The advent of the online version seems to have invigorated the participants who are sure roulette will last a long time.
