Family favourites: The best stories for bedtime

Stories are a brilliant way to get children's imaginations working before they go to sleep. For many years children have been read bedtime stories by their parents and it is a far better option than letting them sit in front of the television for half an hour. Not only does it get exercise their brain but it is also the perfect way to send them off to sleep without thinking about any worries they might have in life. Although there is a huge selection of bedtime stories, there are certain stories which have become favourites around the world.

One of the most popular bedtime stories of all time is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This book is simple and children enjoy hearing it over and over again. Because of this it has continued to be successful and sell since it was first released some 43 years ago in 1969. The book is about a caterpillar which is very hungry and so eats lots of food before eventually turning into a beautiful butterfly. It is available in a staggering 47 languages and believe it or not still sells on average a copy every minute across the world.

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is another bedtime story which has maintained its popularity ever since it was first released. The story sees a group of children discover that hidden in the back of a wardrobe is magic world called Narnia. The children enter into the other world and have a breath taking adventure. This story has been made more popular by the feature length films which have been released.

There are a lot of modern stories which are just as popular too and the Harry Potter series is a perfect example of this. They have become a bedtime story favourite in recent years especially because of the huge success of the film versions of the books. Parents should be aware however that there are seven lengthy Harry Potter books for them to get through.

Another classic story is that of Winnie the Pooh. Winnie the Pooh has also been around for a number of years and the various stories involving his friends; Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger among others are thoroughly entertaining and funny.
